Construction work on the Baldeneysee has resumed after construction was halted at the regatta grandstand.
Many visitors to the Baldeneysee had recently wondered why construction on the new regatta grandstand had stalled. The reason: Construction work on the new grandstand at the Baldeneysee suffered an unexpected setback. While soil samples taken in preparation for the project had revealed some soil contamination in certain areas, more recently taken samples showed an alarming level of subsoil contamination.
Gas-fired power plant below the hill
This occurred in October 2024 when elevated levels of mineral oil hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and traces of lead, copper, mercury, and zinc were detected. These are believed to have originated from a gas-fired power plant that Alfred Krupp built to supply the Villa Hügel and whose outbuildings were erected below the hill in the Ruhr valley in 1871.
Contaminated soil
To prevent the spread of pollutants and protect the sensitive environment on the lakeshore, comprehensive measures had to be taken. The contaminated soil was temporarily stored on special tarpaulins to prevent leaching and thus any risk to the groundwater and the lake. The pollutants are bound and not air-soluble. After the soil was removed, the construction site could be reopened. The Essen municipal sports and swimming pool authority anticipates additional costs of approximately €1.5 million.
Regatta season 2026
This incident, however, led to significant delays in the construction schedule, which will be difficult to make up for. Completion, originally planned for March 2026, has therefore been postponed. This is particularly regrettable as the regatta grandstand plays a vital role for water sports and the competitions held at the Baldeneysee. Regatta activities have been suspended since the start of the demolition work – including disciplines such as canoe racing., Canoe polo, Dragon boat racing, Sailing and rowing. With the completion of the new regatta grandstand, competitive sports are expected to take place on the... Baldeneysee Construction will resume. The local clubs are planning for completion by the 2026 season. Therefore, the plan is for the building to be at least structurally complete by May 2026, although completion was not yet finalized.
Resumption of construction work
Fortunately, construction work was able to resume on Monday, March 24, 2025. The contracted specialist company has since continued the earthworks. The Baldeneysee.Ruhr editorial team, which is documenting the progress on site, noted that work is even continuing on Saturdays – as was the case on March 29, 2025. This demonstrates the commitment to at least moving the project forward, even if it may not be possible to make up for the lost time.
Vision of the new regatta grandstand
The vision for the new regatta grandstand is ambitious: The planned building will extend over 135 meters and offer space for approximately 1,700 spectators. In addition to seating and standing room, the side facing away from the lake will house modern functional rooms and storage areas for sports clubs. Events and visitors alike will benefit from the new facilities. For example, the new grandstand will offer barrier-free access thanks to an integrated platform lift. The completion of this project will not only revitalize sporting activities at the Baldeneysee regatta course but will undoubtedly enhance the surrounding area and serve as a modern landmark.
