Scheppen harbor for passenger ships on Baldeneysee

The Scheppen harbor, formerly the EVAG harbor, on Baldeneysee is closely linked to the history of Lake Baldeney. The harbor serves as the home port and "anchorage" for the passenger ships of Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH on Baldeneysee. The passenger ships are moored here: MS Stadt Essen, MS Westenergie (formerly MS innogy), MS Baldeney, MS Heisingen, MS Kettwig and MS Isenberg. It is located on the southern shore of the lake in the immediate vicinity of campsites (formerly Strandbad Scheppen), the historic Haus Scheppena popular excursion destination with restaurants, one of Germany's most popular motorcycle meeting places and direct access to the water.

From EVAG to Ruhrbahn

The name "EVAG-Hafen" is historical, as the Essener Verkehrs-AG (EVAG) used to operate the shipping traffic. Today, the fleet of passenger ships operates under the name Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH, a subsidiary of Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft (EVV). The name EVAG is now also history. Essener Verkehrs-AG merged with Mรผlheimer Verkehrs Gesellschaft (MVG) and has been called Ruhrbahn GmbH since September 1, 2017.

Historical background

With the completion of the Baldeneysee in 1933, the then Verkehrsgesellschaft Baldeneysee began operating passenger services on the newly created Baldeneysee. The fleet, which originally transported colliery workers, thus operated a ferry service. In 1954, the transport company became EVAG. The lake became more and more popular and increasingly developed into a supra-regional leisure attraction. In the 1970s and 1980s, the fleet was modernized, older ships were replaced and new ones acquired, including the MS Gruga, MS Stadt Essen and MS Baldeney. In 2000, the Weisse Flotte was spun off from EVAG and has since been a sister company under the umbrella of Essener Versorgungs- und Verkehrsgesellschaft (EVV). Then as now, the port of Scheppen is the home port.

Current developments

Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH now operates electrically powered ships. Gone are the days when it smelled of diesel when you were at the port. Since 2023, all large ships have been converted to electric propulsion. The port serves as a central mooring, maintenance and recharging point for the fleet. In the past, it was also the starting point for numerous scheduled and event trips. Today, it is no longer open to the public.

Meaning today

The port is not only a technical hub, but also a symbol of the Ruhr Valley's transformation from an industrial to a leisure location. It combines tradition with innovation by combining historical roots with modern, sustainable mobility. In the immediate vicinity of the Scheppen harbor is the historic Haus Scheppen, camping sites, the Essen Yacht Club, the Haus Scheppen motorcycle club and the site of the former Pรถrtingsiepen colliery and terminus of the historic trains of the Hespertalbahn.
