SUP the stress away on Baldeneysee
Stand-up paddling (SUP for short) has become one of the most popular water sports in recent years. No wonder, as it can be learned and practiced by anyone. SUP combines exercise, balance and the experience of nature on the Baldeneysee in a way that is both relaxing and effective for physical fitness - and in a gentle way. Once you glide over the surface of the water on a board, you immediately feel the unique freedom that this sport offers. With the SUP on Baldeneysee , negative stress can simply be paddled away.
The entry-level equipment
You need a certain amount of basic equipment for stand-up paddling. First and foremost, of course, is the SUP board. There are different types and shapes, depending on the intended use, SUP boards range from touring, all-round and wave boards to race boards. Beginners are well advised to use a so-called all-round board. It is wider and has good stability - everything you need as a beginner. If you don't want to spend money on your own board straight away and want to try out SUP first, it's best to take a beginners' course like Marie. In her experience report on Baldeneysee.Ruhr, she describes her impressions in detail and gives tips for the first time.
Paddle and leash
Logically, nothing works on a SUP without a paddle. Adjustable paddles are ideal as they can be individually and continuously adjusted to the perfect length for your body size. A leash (safety line) is also essential. The leash is flexible and is attached to the ankle with Velcro. It ensures that the board does not drift if you should fall into the water.
Life jacket and other equipment
A life jacket is particularly important for beginners and on open waters such as Baldeneysee . It ensures safety. Especially when the water in Baldeneysee is unexpectedly cold or the elodea aquatic plants find their way to the surface and get caught in the paddle, a life jacket offers safety. An optional and practical dry bag is also available. The waterproof bag allows you to transport valuables or a change of clothes - in case you want to take a break and have a drink in one of the lakeside cafés or bars along the way. A swimming shirt or wetsuit can be useful. The latter is particularly recommended for colder temperatures in the air and in Baldeneysee.
Which muscles are trained?
SUP is known to be an effective full-body workout that works the following muscle groups in particular: core muscles, arms and shoulders and glutes. The core muscles, i.e. the abdominal and back muscles, are essential for balance on the board and are continuously strengthened in a juicy way. The constant balancing movement upwards, downwards and to the sides stabilizes posture and strengthens the leg muscles. Paddling naturally trains the upper arms and shoulders intensively. The movements require strength, which you exert when working against the water. The muscles in the buttocks area are particularly challenged on long tours.
Mental aspects of stand-up paddling
In addition to the physical benefits, SUP also offers a balance for the soul. SUP is an extraordinary way to be active in nature and switch off completely. You glide silently over the water, take in your surroundings and can even see the movement as a form of meditation. It's simply different whether I'm at home, possibly reading a book next to my home office or ironing, or gliding along on Baldeneysee in an environment that I associate in the smallest way with work. I'm sure that makes sense to everyone.
Many positive aspects
Stress reduction is therefore one of the most underestimated but immensely important aspects of SUP for mental health. The combination of calm movements and water has been proven to promote relaxation, peace and inner balance. The constant movement on the water trains stamina and therefore promotes circulation and heart health. The constant balance work on the board ensures an upright and stable posture and thus improves posture. Not forgetting the fresh air, vitamin D from the sun and the release of happiness hormones.
Our conclusion
Whether as a leisure activity, fitness workout, competitive sport or yoga retreat - SUP simply offers something for everyone. Stand-up paddling is far more than just a trend sport. It is a way of life that combines fitness, experiencing nature and mental relaxation in one. Whether on Baldeneysee, the Ruhr or the sea - glide across the water on a SUP board and benefit from the good vibes in everyday life.
