Canoe polo is undoubtedly one of the most agile and demanding water sports. It combines elements of kayaking, canoe sprinting, and ball sports. The sport unites speed, agility, and strategic thinking into a captivating spectacle that enthralls both players and spectators alike. Canoe polo clubs, the Kanu-Sportverein Rothe Mühle e.V. and the Kanu-Gesellschaft Wanderfalke e.V. On the Baldeneysee Canoe polo tournaments are held regularly.
History and development
The origins of canoe polo date back to the early 20th century. As early as the 1920s, water sports enthusiasts are said to have experimented with various forms of the game, using kayaks or canoes as means of transport. The first official canoe polo rules, established in 1966, originated with the British Canoe Union. Since then, the sport has continuously evolved and was officially recognized by the International Canoe Federation (ICF) in 1990.
Canoe polo tournaments on the Baldeneysee
There are now numerous national and international competitions worldwide, including the Canoe Polo World Championships, which are held every two years, and the annual Baldeneysee event., International Germany Cup. The German Canoe Polo Bundesliga also regularly uses the Baldeneysee. The sport is particularly well-represented in Europe, with major leagues in Germany, France, and Great Britain.
The rules: fast game – confined space
Canoe polo is played on a rectangular field measuring 35 x 25 meters. The field can be located on a lake, such as the Baldeneysee, a river, such as the Ruhr, or a pool, such as the one at the Grugabad. Two teams of five players each, with a maximum of three substitutes, compete against each other. The aim of the game is to get the ball into the opposing team's goal – similar to water polo, but using canoes and paddles as propulsion.
Polo boat and double paddle
Each player sits in a special polo boat, which is shorter and more maneuverable than conventional kayaks. Using a double-bladed paddle, players propel themselves across the playing field, attempting to control the ball and guide their team to goals with precise passes. The game is characterized by quick bursts of speed, sudden changes of direction, skillful maneuvers, and physical duels. The goals are mounted two meters above the water's surface. Scoring at this height requires precise shots and agility. A match consists of two ten-minute halves. Halftime in canoe polo is a short break.
Equipment and technology
The players wear protective vests and helmets with mesh visors to protect themselves from injury. The boats are particularly important: they are stable enough to withstand contact with other players, yet light enough to ensure high maneuverability. A key technique in canoe polo is the roll – a technique that allows players to right themselves after capsizing, either by paddling or through body movement, and to get their upper body out of the water. This skill is essential, as collisions and capsizing are common occurrences in the heat of the game.
