Reconstruction on Baldeneysee: The regatta grandstand is taking shape
The traditional regatta course on Baldeneysee in Essen is currently undergoing a radical transformation. The demolition of the old grandstand marked the start of an ambitious new construction project, which aims to provide a modern and sustainable stage for local recreation and water sports in the region. For decades, the old regatta grandstand has been a place for top sporting performances, emotional moments, communal experiences and relaxation - now it is being rethought and rebuilt. On this page you will find exclusive pictures of the construction progress - a visual insight into the metamorphosis of a landmark.
Project with symbolic power
Baldeneysee is much more than just a local recreation area - it is a center for national and international rowing, canoeing and sailing competitions. The old grandstand, which was getting on in years and no longer up to date, could no longer meet the requirements of modern events. In addition, the outdated regatta grandstand would have had to be renovated, which would not have made sense. The new building should set new standards here: The focus is on accessibility, optimized sightlines, modern event technology, storage areas and a sustainable energy concept.
The new grandstand should not only be functional, but also a modern, architectural highlight. With its open, transparent design, the new building should blend harmoniously into the surroundings between the regatta tower and the Regattahaus and regatta house and offer plenty of space for spectators. There will also be upgrades behind the scenes: storage and technical rooms are planned here.

Construction work began in 2024 and has been interrupted ever since. According to the city of Essen, the interruptions are due to the discovery of pollutants. As the planned schedule cannot be adhered to and the new grandstand would not have been ready in time for the 2026 regatta season, the decision was made to first complete a shortened version of the new grandstand. This is because, in addition to the canoeing and sailing competitions, the German Junior and Year Group Championships of the German Rowing Association will be held on the regatta course on Lake Baldeney next year. Baldeneysee will be held.

A place for all generations
The new regatta grandstand will not only create a sports center - but also a place to meet and relax. In addition to sporting competitions, cultural events, public viewings and leisure activities for families are also planned. The city of Essen is thus sending out a strong signal for the importance of sport, sustainability and community.
The regatta grandstand on Baldeneysee promises to become a new landmark on Baldeneysee - modern, open, sustainable and state-of-the-art.
