Rowers from Baldeneysee win bronze
Essen rowers Jannik Elsner and Jonas Frommhold of Essen-Werdener Ruder-Club von 1896 e.V. (EWRC) were delighted to win bronze at the U19 World Championships in Canada on August 25, 2024. All their hard work and that of their coach Leonie Neuhaus, with thousands of training kilometers on the water, paid off. Baldeneysee, on the rowing ergometer as well as at national and international regattas, were crowned at the eights race in St. Catharines.
Family, friends and club colleagues
Family, friends, and fellow club members were there live at the public viewing in the clubhouse, cheering and sharing in the excitement. At 2:55 p.m. local time – 8:55 p.m. German time – the starting gun fired for the six qualified large boats. Among them were the U19 eights from Great Britain, France, Canada, the USA, and New Zealand. The English immediately increased their stroke rate to an impressive 49 strokes per minute, quickly establishing a lead of a boat length between themselves and the remaining five boats. Although the Americans also started at 48 strokes, and the German boat had the lowest stroke rate at the beginning with 42 strokes, the five boats initially stayed together. Only in the second half of the race did the Americans manage to pull away somewhat from the German and New Zealand boats, which had been neck and neck for a long time in the battle for third place. While the English secured first place with ease, the German U19 eight made a strong comeback in the final meters and finished a comfortable third.

Selection and preparation
To prepare for this major event, the two rowers from Baldeneysee completed two training camps in Frankfurt and Munich, where they analyzed who would be the best fit for the boat to achieve the best possible result. While Jonas Frommhold secured his place immediately, Jannik Elsner also made it into the eight. To prepare, both flew to Canada with the other athletes and coaches to get in the best possible shape for this challenge. All the more reason to celebrate that they were able to row to a bronze medal. Baldeneysee-Ruhr congratulates them on this outstanding achievement!
