ADFC praises the quality of the route – Baldeneysee as a highlight
Berlin, Baldeneysee, March 4, 2026. The Ruhr Valley Cycle Route remains one of Germany's leading cycling destinations: At the International Tourism Exchange 2026 (ITB) in Berlin, the General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) once again awarded the route four stars. The nationally recognized seal of approval is valid for three years and has now been awarded to the approximately 240-kilometer-long riverside cycle path for the sixth time since 2010. The evaluation takes into account factors such as path quality, signage, width, and tourist infrastructure.
Importance for the region
Garrelt Duin, Regional Director of the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR), sees the renewed award as a strong signal: The Ruhr Valley Cycle Route will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026 and stands "for the attractiveness of the Ruhr region" by combining nature, culture, and industrial history. Thomas Grosche, District Administrator of the Hochsauerland district, also emphasizes the role of the many partners involved, whose continuous work makes the high quality possible in the first place. He stated more specifically: "As the source region of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route is a prime example of the region's strength and quality." Ruhr Valley Cycle Route We are proud to be part of this success story. The renewed ADFC classification confirms the commitment of many partners.“
Improvements through quality control
The regular ADFC analysis provides the project managers at Ruhrtourismus GmbH (RTG) and Sauerland-Tourismus eV with important insights for improvements. Many measures – such as more precise signage or additional rest areas – arise directly from the auditors' recommendations.

Baldeneysee as a highlight of the route
A particularly popular section runs along the Baldeneysees in Essen, one of the most frequented sections of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route. Here, cyclists encounter a mix of waterways, nature reserves, recreational areas, and industrial heritage – a section that exemplifies the diversity of the entire route and significantly contributes to its appeal.
