A significant cultural monument at Baldeneysee shines in new splendor
Eat, Baldeneysee, December 11, 2025. The Isenburg Castle Ruins in Essen-Bredeney Shining in new splendor: "Grün und Gruga," the City of Essen's department responsible for the care, development, and planning of the city's green spaces and forests, has completely renovated the historic adventure trail. The project was financed by the Essen City Beautification Foundation, which has been committed to preserving important cultural sites for decades.
Monument with 750 years of history
Isenburg Castle is one of the most impressive medieval fortifications in the region. Built around 750 years ago, it served as a center of power for controlling the Essen area. Over the centuries, the castle fell into disrepair and became overgrown with forest before large sections were excavated and opened to the public about 70 years ago. Today, the entire site is a protected historical monument and is owned by the city of Essen.
Adventure trail as a gateway to the past
Since its opening in 2002, the historical discovery trail has offered visitors fascinating insights into life at the castle through six information panels. However, overgrowth, weathering, and vandalism have taken a heavy toll on the panels and the site itself: damage and graffiti have recently marred the overall impression of the grounds.
Comprehensive renovation for improved quality of stay
By replacing all the information panels and repairing the mountings, Grün und Gruga has now demonstrated its commitment to preserving this cultural monument. The new panels are not only more durable but also feature a modern design and are intended to provide visitors with comprehensive information.

The newly designed discovery trail enhances the visitor experience and contributes to strengthening historical awareness and the cultural identity of the city of Essen. Isenburg is thus becoming a vibrant place of history once more, connecting the past and present.
