Origins of the Christian Community Kettwig
The origins of the Christian community in Kettwig likely date back to the 9th century when the town was still closely associated with the Imperial Abbey of Werden. The first church building was Romanesque, and the mighty west tower from that period has survived to this day – a square colossus of rubble stone that, with its formidable appearance, recalls the dual function of medieval churches: house of God and refuge at the same time. This tower was already visible from afar, survived wars, renovations, and even the devastating city fire of 1679, which destroyed large parts of Kettwig and the then-current church.

After this disaster, the community decided on a radical new beginning. The old nave was demolished, and between 1720 and 1723, a new building emerged, impressively embodying the spirit of the Baroque. The Romanesque tower received a curved „Welsch hood“ with a lantern, which visually adapted it to the new nave. Thus, an ensemble of listed buildings was created, which to this day shapes the silhouette of the Kettwig Old Town shapes.
The best of different eras
While the tower, with its rough stone structure, makes the centuries palpable, the Baroque nave presents itself as an elegant, plastered hall. Large round-arched windows let in plenty of light into the interior, which, despite later renovations, has retained the solemn character of the Baroque. Those who enter St. Peter experience a bright, spacious room, whose atmosphere is carried by warm light, clear lines, and elaborate details.

Baroque high altar as an eye-catcher
In the chancel, the magnificent Baroque high altar draws the eye – an artfully designed center that dictates the liturgical orientation of the space.
