St. Lucius Church in Essen-Werden – Information and Architecture

St. Lucius Church in Essen district Werden It is a historical gem with a rich and eventful past. It is considered one of the oldest parish churches north of the Alps. Here is some interesting information about the church on Heckstrasse:

Origins and architecture

Construction of St. Lucius Church began in 995 under Abbot Werinbert. Upon its completion, it was consecrated by Archbishop Anno II of Cologne in 1063. Originally built as a simple hall church, it gained two low side aisles around 1100. The north chancel wall displays remnants of early Romanesque wall paintings. The architecture is both simple and remarkable. The almost apsidal entrance hall is juxtaposed with a massive, fortress-like west tower, flanked by two smaller towers.

Secularization and Reconstruction

The Roman Catholic church lies north of St. Ludgerus Basilica and is considered one of the oldest parish churches north of the Alps. Originally built as a branch church of the Benedictine monastery (Werden), it was reserved for devotion and prayer and served as a spiritual center. Over time, St. Lucius Church was deconsecrated and, from 1811 onward, used as a straw store in the 19th century. It even served as a residence for a time, with additional ceilings and walls added. Thanks to the plans of Professor Wilhelm Effmann, the original state could be restored during a reconstruction. Reconstruction began in 1957. By 1965, St. Lucius Church had been restored and was reconsecrated.

Artwork and interior design

The front and back of the altar are adorned with reliefs by the sculptor Elmar Hillebrand. Remnants of historical painted decorations are preserved in the niches of the chancel sides. St. Lucius Church is entered through a heavy double door with copper fittings. A substantial holy water font is centrally located in the square-shaped vestibule. The church's painterly and colorful design reflects the Romanesque period, the era of its construction. Simple facades, meter-thick walls, and small windows with semicircular arches are the distinctive features of this period, which are also characteristic of St. Lucius Church in Essen's southern district.

Our conclusion

The church, rather simple both inside and out, impresses with its special atmosphere. Relatively small compared to other stately houses of worship, the interior feels homey and, despite its straight lines, almost cozy. Thanks to its meter-thick walls, the church remains quite cool even in the height of summer – something to consider when choosing your attire for attending Mass or a wedding. Today, the church is used for Catholic family services, school services, and choir rehearsals. Due to its attractive location near the Ruhr River and Lake Baldeney, and its intimate atmosphere, St. Lucius Church is also a popular choice for weddings.
