Mit der Regatta „Blaues Band vom Baldeneysee“ eröffnet der Yacht-Club Ruhrland Essen (YCRE) traditionell die Segelsaison und macht den See zum Schauplatz eines der beliebtesten Segel-Events im Ruhrgebiet. Die Regatta ist klassenoffen – vom Opti bis zur sportlichen Jolle, vom Familienboot bis zum sportlichen Einrumpfboot ist alles dabei. The Blue Riband is intentionally aimed at all boat classes. Scoring is based on Yardstick, allowing slow and fast boats to compete fairly. The start and finish are located directly in front of the YCRE clubhouse. The proximity to the action ensures that every change in wind and every gained boat length can be experienced firsthand.

Around the regatta, an atmosphere that resembles a small folk festival arises on May 1st: crews prepare their boats, children dart across the club grounds, and people chat enthusiastically on the terrace. After the finish line of the last boat, the award ceremony follows promptly – often the prelude to a convivial evening with discussions about maneuvers, wind shifts, and plans for the new sailing season.

The entire spectrum of sailing becomes particularly visible at the Blue Ribbon: children in Optimists, teenagers in 420s or dinghies, experienced crews on sporty monohulls.
