Deaths in the Ruhr and in the Baldeneysee

On the Baldeneysee an 18-year-old young man lost his life when jumping from a pier into the water. He appeared to have been a non-swimmer. Current divers found him thirty to forty-five minutes later, but immediate resuscitation measures ultimately could not prevent his death. The most recent tragic accident occurred on August 3, 2026, at the Spillenburger Wehr on the Ruhr river near Steele. A 34-year-old man went under while swimming. Passers-by noticed him sinking and immediately alerted emergency services. A courageous passer-by immediately jumped into the water himself. The rescue forces arriving immediately were supported by a kayaker who provided precise information about the casualty's position. After about 15 minutes, the man was recovered and resuscitation measures were initiated. Nevertheless, despite rapid intervention, discovery, and all measures, he died.
Why are the Ruhr and the Rhine so dangerous?
The German Life-Saving Association (DLRG) has been pointing out the risks in these waters for years. It warns in particular against swimming outside the officially approved areas such as the Seaside Beach Baldeney and the Steele lido. The Ruhr and the Baldeneysee feature dangerous undercurrents that can quickly put even experienced swimmers in distress. In addition, the waters are characterized by various temperature layers that are not visible on the surface and can cause sudden cold shocks.
How swimmers protect themselves from dangers in the Ruhr and Rhine
Swimming in the Ruhr and Rhine is not only dangerous for people who cannot swim safely. In natural waters, there are currents, abrupt depth variations, and cold water layers - they can quickly become dangerous. Even experienced swimmers are not protected from accidents. Undercurrents, exhaustion, or sudden circulatory problems can put even practiced swimmers into life-threatening situations.
To minimize the risk, swimmers should use exclusively designated swimming areas, never go into the water alone, and realistically assess their own abilities. After prolonged sunbathing, it is recommended to gradually get the body used to the water temperature. In addition, heavy meals, alcohol, and other intoxicating substances should be strictly avoided before swimming. Anyone who feels exhausted in the water should stay calm, float on their back, and call for help immediately.

Men are at particular risk
It is striking that males were affected in all current cases. DLRG statistics confirm: around 80 percent of drowning victims in Germany are male. According to the 2025 DLRG statistics, most fatal swimming accidents occurred due to overestimation of one's own swimming abilities or risky behavior, often in natural waters with currents and cold traps.
