First quarter of 2025 also in positive territory
Ruhr Area, May 22, 2025. Tourism in the Ruhr Area continues to show positive development and clearly stands out from the nationwide trend. According to current figures from Ruhr Tourism GmbH, accommodation providers recorded a significant increase in guest arrivals and overnight stays in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the previous year. This tourism trend for the Ruhr Area, with an influx of international guests, was recently confirmed by Lake and Canal Manager Boris Orlowski of Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH in a podcast interview with Sparkasse Essen. Orlowski stated: "(...) that so many tourists from outside the region are visiting the Ruhr Area." Baldeneysee The number of tourists we had here over Easter, whether on foot, by hiking trail, by bicycle, or on foot, was truly moving (...).”
Above the record year 2024
In the first three months of the year, the Ruhr region welcomed nearly 988,000 guests – an increase of 5 percent compared to the same period last year. The development in overnight stays is even more encouraging: with approximately 1.9 million overnight stays, this represents growth of 2 percent. Particularly noteworthy in this context is the increase in international visitors. Arrivals here rose by 10.5 percent, while overnight stays increased by 4.9 percent. These gains are a major factor in the Ruhr region even surpassing the already high level of the record year 2024.

Strong March 2025
The month of March 2025 also saw above-average growth compared to the previous year. With almost 381,000 guests and over 738,000 overnight stays, the Ruhr region recorded an increase of 7.3 percent and 5 percent, respectively, compared to March 2024. Experts attribute this development, which contrasts with the national trend, to a successful combination of several major trade fairs and a diverse range of events that attracted numerous visitors to the region.
