Art on the regatta tower
As part of the European Capital of Culture RUHR.2010, an impressive art installation by artist Christoph Hildebrand has been realized on the roof of the regatta tower at the Baldeneysee an impressive art installation by the artist Christoph Hildebrand has been realized. The installation with the significant title "Time" consists of twenty clocks in different sizes. These in turn are placed at different heights and directions on the roof of the regatta tower. The white clock faces are illuminated at night and mark the regatta tower as an impressive point, similar to a lighthouse on the coast.
Concept and meaning
None of the twenty installed clocks show a normal time. Rather, each of the timepieces runs at a different speed and even changes pace constantly. Some of the clocks move slowly, while others seem to race and even turn backwards. In this way, the Time installation aims to break with the conventional theme and question the perception of time. Observers and visitors are encouraged to reflect on the concept of time and the transience associated with it and to critically examine the topic, which is anchored everywhere in society.
Art and intention
In contrast to the standardized and centrally controlled time dictated by the world clock, the artist Christoph Hildebrand uses the symbol of the clock as an image that stands for individuality and freedom. Time is thus to be experienced and internalized from a new perspective. Time as an image of personal freedom and individual perception, if you will.
Costly material disposal
As the WDR reported, citing the regional association, efforts to curb the growth of Elodea nuttalli using other methods have had little success. Herbivorous fish, water harrows or removal with water pressure were tested as part of a research project. Although the waterweed indicates good water quality and should be seen as a good sign, its proliferation and rapid growth of up to 20 centimetres a day up to the water surface is also dangerous for water sports enthusiasts.
Technical implementation
The artist states that, thanks to modern control technology, he was able to program the clocks in such a way that they form a common, concertante dramaturgy of acceleration and deceleration, according to Hildebrand. In any case, the clocks provide illumination and liveliness when the streams of visitors stop in the evening and night falls over the Baldeneysee spreads out over the
Public debate
Art in public spaces is a major topic that is often the subject of controversial debate. Some people take offense at it, others appreciate the public discussion of a particular topic. The Time installation is certainly an enrichment, as it is a lively and questioning examination of a topic that simply affects everyone.
About the regatta tower
The regatta tower on Baldeneysee in Essen is a historical icon and a popular focal point for visitors to Lake Baldeney in Essen's Ruhr Valley. Together with the regatta grandstand, the regatta tower forms an ensemble that characterizes the appearance of the northern shore of Lake Baldeney. The tower from 1962 and the grandstand from the 1930s therefore have a long and interesting history.
