Sports center below Villa Hügel
Anyone strolling along the banks of the Baldeneysee will inevitably notice a striking building: the Regattahaus Essen. Nestled in the green setting of the Bredeney district, Besides the regatta grandstand, regatta tower, and regatta parking lot, it is far more than just an event venue – it is a boathouse, a place for encounters, activity, and urban and sporting history. From international regattas and sports facilities to seminars with a lake view: The Regattahaus uniquely combines sport, education and nature.
Water sports center
Located directly on the famous regatta course at Baldeneysee, the Regattahaus is the organizational hub for numerous rowing and canoeing events. Races are planned here, boats are weighed, officials are briefed, and training courses are held. The regatta course itself offers eight identical lanes and is equipped with state-of-the-art technology – from electronic false start control to a video finish line camera. The Regattahaus houses the regatta office, changing rooms, and weigh-in – everything needed for professionally run regattas and competitions. A ship's crane allows for the easy launching of support boats.
Architecture with a view
The fully glazed seminar rooms of the Regattahaus offer a panoramic view of the Baldeneysee – A unique setting and view, unparalleled in every season. The lakeside balcony is often used as a break area and offers officials an excellent overview of events. The interior rooms are flexible: whether a conference for 160 people or a small seminar for 30 – the house can be adapted to the needs of its guests.

Knowledge meets waves
The Regattahaus is used not only by athletes, associations, and educational institutions for training camps, workshops, and conferences. Its technical equipment ranges from overhead projectors to LCD projectors, complemented by wireless microphones and multi-boards. The proximity to the water is inspiring – and creates a creative environment where ideas flow – much like the gentle waves of the Baldeneysee itself.
A place in transition
The entire regatta area has been undergoing redesign since 2019 – including Regatta Tower, parking and shoreline. The old grandstand was demolished in 2024. and makes way for a modern building with 1,700 seats and barrier-free access. The Regattahaus building is also slated for functional expansion – with event spaces, storage facilities, and a center for elite sports. The vision: a modern center for competitive sports and the public.
More than a building
The Regattahaus Essen building at the Baldeneysee site is a symbol of movement – in a sporting, social, and urban planning sense. It represents the connection between tradition and future, between performance, life goals, and the joy of sport. The building at Baldeneysee is an institution, not just a place – it is the hub of water sports in Essen. The Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung (WAZ) reported on considerations to relocate the Rhine-Ruhr Olympic Training Center to Baldeneysee.
