Pfingst Open Air – Free and outdoors in the Löwental

The Pfingst Open Air, also known as POA, in the Essen Werdener Löwental, The festival took place for the 39th time in 2024. Its origins date back to 1980. The music event attracts thousands of visitors every year and is one of the leading music festivals in the region. Of course, Pfingst Open Air is not just a music festival, but also a place for meeting, culture, and shared experiences. It boasts an impressive lineup, ranging from rock to electronic music, offering something for every musical taste. It particularly appeals to those looking for new music or open to new sounds.

E-Meadow and Main Stage

The free open-air event traditionally takes place on the Ruhr meadows (Werdener Löwental) and features two stages – the main stage and the Electronic Meadow, or E-Meadow for short. As the name suggests, electronic music is played on the E-Meadow, while the main stage hosts the main acts, artists with a musical repertoire ranging from heavy metal and rock to hip-hop. The festival is considered a highlight of the festival year, crowning it with a welcoming atmosphere and a diverse cultural program.

Family-friendly festival

Until 2024, the Werdener Open-Air festival was jointly organized by the youth welfare office and the rock music association. Just when many thought the festival might be cancelled in 2025, a new organizer was announced shortly beforehand. Indie Radar Ruhr from Oberhausen, led by Maximilian Janetzki, has already made a name for itself as an event organizer in Oberhausen and is now also responsible for the 2024 festival. The fact that no expensive tickets are required, as admission is free, also makes it family-friendly. Comeback after Corona

Due to the Corona pandemic, the festival was unable to take place for three years and finally celebrated its comeback in 2023 with a new edition. This so-called new edition meant that the festival no longer took place on Whit Monday, but on Whit Saturday. This seems likely to be retained in the future, as in 2024 it was again on Whit Saturday that the idyllic Ruhr meadows, the Alte Strandbad Essen-Werden, were immersed in rap and hip hop sounds.

Here comes the sun

The music festival has a different theme each year. The theme in 2024 was "Here Comes the Sun." Even though the weather isn't always ideal at festivals like the Werdener Open Air, visitors aren't deterred and come prepared with sturdy shoes and rain ponchos. The latter are also available for a small fee at the vendor stalls on the grounds. Besides food and drink stalls, you'll also find jewelry and handicrafts. As with other events, for safety reasons, bottles are strictly prohibited on the Werdener Open Air grounds. However, there is a drinking water fountain where you can fill up your water bottle free of charge. Information booths and activities address topics relevant to young people.

Supporting young talent and networking

The goals of the open-air festival are to promote emerging talent, network with event organizers and the youth culture scene in Essen and the surrounding area, and present youth-relevant topics in a relaxed atmosphere. The invited artists come from Essen and the surrounding region, making the festival a springboard for local newcomers. Of course, there are also some big names who headline, drawing large crowds to this fantastic event. Among the most well-known artists who have performed at Pfingst Open Air are Martinez, Giant Rooks, Roosevelt, the 257ers, IL Civetto, Kay Shanghai, Clueso, Gentleman, Makko, and OTPendia.
