Renovation of the Baldeneysee: The regatta grandstand is taking shape
The historic regatta course at Essen's Baldeneysee is currently undergoing a dramatic transformation. The demolition of the old grandstand marked the beginning of an ambitious new construction project, designed to provide a modern and sustainable venue for recreation and water sports in the region. For decades, the old grandstand has been a place for top athletic performances, emotional moments, shared experiences, and relaxation – now it is being reimagined and rebuilt. On this page, you'll find exclusive photos documenting the construction progress – a visual glimpse into the metamorphosis of a landmark.
A project with symbolic power
The Baldeneysee is far more than a recreational area – it's a center for national and international rowing, canoeing, and sailing competitions. The old grandstand, outdated and no longer up-to-date, could no longer meet the demands of modern events. Furthermore, renovating the aging regatta grandstand would have been pointless. The new building is intended to set new standards: accessibility, optimized sightlines, state-of-the-art event technology, storage space, and a sustainable energy concept are the key features.
The new grandstand is intended to be not only functional but also a modern architectural highlight. With its open, transparent design, the new building is meant to blend harmoniously into its surroundings between the regatta tower and... Regattahaus They will be installed and offer plenty of space for spectators. Upgrades are also planned behind the scenes: storage and technical rooms are planned there.
Pictures of the construction progress
Construction began in 2024 and has been ongoing intermittently ever since. According to the city of Essen, these interruptions are due to the discovery of hazardous materials. Because the original schedule could not be met and the new grandstand would not have been completed in time for the 2026 regatta season, a decision was made to initially complete a shortened version of the grandstand. This is because, in addition to the canoe and sailing competitions, the German Junior and Age Group Championships of the German Rowing Federation will also be held on the regatta course next year. In addition to sporting competitions, cultural events, public viewings, and leisure activities for families are planned. The city of Essen is thus sending a strong message about the importance of sport, sustainability, and community.
The regatta grandstand at Baldeneysee promises to become a new landmark at Baldeneysee – modern, open, sustainable and state-of-the-art.
