Traditional event on Ascension Day

The NRZ hiking day at Baldeneysee It traditionally takes place on Ascension Day. The abbreviation NRZ stands for "Neue Ruhr Zeitung" (New Ruhr Newspaper). "Get off the couch and into nature" could be the motto, as this recreational sports event isn't just for dedicated hikers. Young and old, sports fanatics and couch potatoes, two-legged and four-legged friends – everyone can participate. Three routes of varying lengths and a "walking option" ensure everyone can get active together.

Three routes and a walking option

Participants can choose between three different lengths Tours Choose from 10, 18, or 25-kilometer routes for adults, as well as special tours for families with young children and dog owners. The dog hike is accompanied by a dog trainer. For seniors and older dogs, there is a walking option. Dog owners should not forget water and a drinking bowl for their four-legged companions. Sturdy footwear is mandatory for all participants.

Hiking for a good cause

A particular highlight of the NRZ hiking day is its social component: Part of the proceeds from the hiking passes will be donated to the Essen branch of the German Child Protection Association. This underscores the communal nature of the event, which not only offers exercise and a nature experience, but also makes a contribution to a good cause.

Tourist attraction: 120 kilometers of hiking trails

At the 52nd NRZ Hiking Day in 2024, Mayor Julia Jacob participated and emphasized the event's importance for the region: "For many readers, the hiking day has been a fixed date on their calendars for many years. The NRZ Hiking Day is also well-known far beyond the city limits of Essen and attracts many people. As Baldeneysee.Ruhr reported, the Ruhr region has quietly and steadily developed into a tourism hotspot. And what's more: "Our city already has a unique tourist attraction in the area of hiking, which is unparalleled in Germany," said Jacob. Among all major cities with over 250,000 inhabitants, Essen boasts the most professional urban hiking network with over 120 kilometers of continuously marked trails.

Well-deserved strengthening

After the hike comes the well-deserved refreshment: At the finish line, hikers are treated to cool drinks and a bratwurst in a bun. The relaxed atmosphere by the water, the forest bathing experience at Baldeneysee, the opportunity to make new friends, and the joy of exercise for all ages make the NRZ hiking day a regular fixture in the Baldeneysee event calendar.
