Rediscover hiking: A competition that shows the way
Hiking is boring? Not for Matyas Zinner and Jonas Dicks from the Maria-Wächtler-Gymnasium in Essen. The two young testers participated in the Stiftung Warentest competition "Jugend testet" (Youth Tests) and wanted to find out which circular hiking trail in North Rhine-Westphalia is particularly suitable for young people. With scientific precision and meticulous attention to detail, they analyzed seven different hiking trails, examining and evaluating them based on more than 30 criteria from six categories:
• Amenities: Are there enough benches, trash cans, food service areas, or restrooms?
• Navigation: How clear are the signs and overview maps? Are the distances accurate?
• Accessibility: Are parking spaces available? Is there good access to public transportation?
• Nature and cultural experience: What landscapes, soil conditions and bodies of water are there to discover?
• Safety: Are there any obstacles, hazards, or emergency call signs?
• Planning: Are there helpful websites, GPX data, and precise length and altitude measurements?

The result: A clear test winner!
After their intensive analysis, the verdict was clear: A circular hiking trail received 123 out of a possible 150 points and impressed in almost all categories. The testers were particularly enthusiastic about the stunning natural scenery and beautiful views that rewarded the hikers' efforts. However, areas for improvement were also identified: Better signage, more seating, and emergency call boxes could significantly enhance the hiking experience. Even greater optimization is needed in the route planning and the avoidance of hazardous areas.
Berlin honors young researchers
Their exceptional dedication and methodical approach earned Matyas and Jonas first place in the "Youth Tests" competition organized by Stiftung Warentest. In Berlin, they presented their findings to a distinguished jury, impressing them with in-depth analysis and innovative testing methods. With over 3,700 participants from across Germany, this year's competition broke all previous records. Matyas and Jonas not only achieved first place, but also, according to their own account, won over their classmates to the idea of hiking together.
Baldeneysee.Ruhr congratulates Jonas and Matyas on their commitment, their 1st place, and for bringing many new and especially young hikers to the BaldeneySteig trail around the Baldeneysee.
