Germany's plans for 2026
Essen, Baldeneysee, January 1, 2026. New Year's resolutions continue even before the turn of the year 2025/2026, and as every year, the most popular resolutions are as familiar as a hangover on January 1st. A recent survey conducted by FOM University of Applied Sciences in Essen among 2,031 people aged 18 and over reveals where people want to go in 2026 – and, above all, where they don't want to go: into stress. 51 percent of respondents want to experience less stress in the new year or actively reduce it. This means that the desire for more serenity remains unchallenged at the top of the list of German resolutions. And where better to practice this than at Essen's largest natural deceleration site? The Baldeneysee offers the perfect backdrop – whether for a relaxing stroll, gazing across the water, or a leisurely start to the day.
Sport, nutrition, time for oneself – the lake as a natural motivator
The other resolutions also fit perfectly with the atmosphere around the lake: 45 percent want to do more sports – ideal conditions for runs along the regatta course or bike tours on the Lake round. 43 percent plan to spend more time with family and friends – perfect for outings, picnics, or short hikes. Baldeneysteig or one of the many other hiking trails around the lake, at the wildlife enclosure Heissiwald or downstream towards the Ruhr Essen-Kettwig Old Town. 39 percent want a healthier diet – a goal that can be wonderfully combined with fresh air and exercise. 39 percent want to consciously take more time for themselves – a moment on a park bench by the water often feels like a small fresh start.
Generation Z: Career enthusiasm and conscious offline moments
Generation Z (18-28 years) enters the new year with particularly clear ideas:
39 percent want to advance their careers and 37 percent want more consciously structured time without digital distractions. Especially on Baldeneysee This shows how well it works: Many young people enjoy nature, exercise, and the opportunity to be fully present in the moment. Generation Y (29–44 years) also focuses on professional development and a better work-life balance. Generation X and the Boomers already frequently use the lake as a place for relaxation – and thus contribute quite naturally to a harmonious overall picture.
Women are increasingly focusing on self-care.
What's particularly striking is how strongly women across all generations prioritize self-care. In Generation Z, 50 percent of women consciously plan more time for themselves, compared to 17 percent of men. Women also lead the way in the desire for greater serenity: 59 percent of young women want to live a more relaxed life by 2026, compared to 36 percent of men. The Baldeneysee offers ideal conditions for this – from tranquil moments by or on the water to inspiring walks that create space for new thoughts.
Sustainability remains a topic – with potential
Sixteen percent of those surveyed want to pay more attention to sustainability in 2026. This can also be wonderfully practiced at the Baldeneysee – for example, through walks, bike rides, or conscious nature experiences that promote appreciation for the environment, such as during [event/activity - context needed]. SauberZauber Or simply by reducing the amount of single-use packaging that ends up in the trash. This is how Essen and Germany are starting the new year with an inspiring mix of energy, serenity, and joie de vivre. And the Baldeneysee? As always, it remains a place where good intentions are easily set in motion – lap after lap, step by step, eyes on the water, and a smile on your face.
