Concerts and exhibitions in Essen-Werden

The picturesque villa, built in the neoclassical style, stands at the very end of Heckstraße (Werdener). The house, which was home to the last mayor of Essen (Werden) until the early 1950s, was purchased by the Sparkasse Essen savings bank in 2002 and extensively restored. Since 1986, the "Association of Friends of the Mayor's House Werden e.V." has hosted cabaret evenings in the stylish rooms and rents out the listed building for events. A slight drawback: limited parking and – out of consideration for the residents – no noise after 10 p.m.

Concerts, readings and exhibitions

After years of decay, the building was saved from demolition in the 1980s thanks to civic engagement. Today, the listed building houses a vibrant cultural center that regularly hosts concerts, readings, and exhibitions. The association "Friends of the Mayor's House" has been ensuring the preservation and cultural use of the building since 1985; it is considered by some to be a kind of "cultural living room of the Ruhr metropolis." Mayor's House It features a small, walled garden with mature trees. It can be rented for events.

A walk through history

The mayor's house is located in the immediate vicinity of the Ruhr River and the... Dam Werden. The surroundings invite you to take a stroll through history. Just a few minutes' walk away rises the historically significant St. Lucius Church and the imposing St. Ludgerus Basilica, whose origins date back to the 8th century. It is one of the most important Romanesque buildings in the Rhineland and was once part of a Benedictine monastery founded by Saint Liudger. Also worth seeing is the former abbey building, which today houses the Folkwang University of the Arts houses. The picturesque Old Town of Werden with its narrow streets, half-timbered houses and small cafes, as well as the Brehminsel round off the cultural experience and make the district a popular destination on the Ruhr.
