Circumnavigate Baldeneysee on asphalt paths
The 14.7-kilometer lake circuit on the Baldeneysee is not only one of the most popular cycle tours in Essen - fans of exercise from all over the Ruhr region cycle to Baldeneysee and circle the Ruhrsee on the lake circuit. The circular tour has a smooth asphalt surface, runs close to the water and offers fascinating views of the dam, sailing boats and green lakeside forests. At the same time, the lake circuit is flat, without any elevation gain. Only the Werden weir has to be overcome. The barrier-free alternative to the lake circuit is the Great Lake Circuit on Baldeneysee.
Idyllic nature and industrial culture
Past the Seaside Beach Baldeney, the Strandbad on Baldeneysee , the venerable Villa Hügel greets you upstream. Villa Hügel with its extensive and unique park. The imposing Villa Hügel with its outbuildings, hidden pavilions and idyllic walks offers a journey into Essen's industrial history. Around the Villa Hügel the Südtiroler StubenBootshaus and Noah's with beer gardens overlooking Baldeneysee. After passing the Werdender Stauwehr, the route continues past the Lujo restaurant in the boathouse of the Essen-Werdener Ruder-Club von 1896 e. V. in the direction of Kupferdreh. You pass the Scheppen harbor and arrive at Haus Scheppen, where there are two snack bars and a well-known motorcycle meeting place. The piers of Weisse Flotte Baldeney GmbH, which offer lake cruises on passenger boats, are dotted along the lake circuit. Along the tracks for the historic trains of the Hespertalbahn e.V. you reach Kupferdreh and, after passing the old railroad bridge, directly to Heisingen. The Heisinger Bogen nature reserve, which ends just before Café Extrablatt, is worth seeing here. Passing the skater park and the Zeche Carl Funke colliery tower, the route heads towards Bredeney and Werden.

Longer bike tours including lake tour
If you want to cover even more kilometers, simply switch to the large lake loop in Werden or Kupferdreh. The small lake loop can also be integrated into long cycle tours - for example on the Ruhr Valley cycle path downstream towards Werden and Mülheim an der Ruhr or via the RS1 high-speed cycle path to Essen city center. In no time at all, you can create a day's stage that ranges from urban charm along the Ruhr promenade to rural forest passages, while also experiencing the industrial culture of the Ruhr region.
