Traditionally held in the merry month of May, and thus one of the first major races of the season, the International Spring Regatta attracts canoeists from all German states, as well as international athletes, to the Baldeneysee. It's rare for a layperson to have the opportunity to observe so many different nationalities and age groups competing in canoe racing at once. The competitions include various races over sprint, short, and middle distances, as well as a long-distance state championship for North Rhine-Westphalia.
Special conditions in 2025
The event will take place under more difficult conditions in 2025. This does not affect the racecourse itself. The Albano system, newly acquired for €200,000 after the 2021 floods, is intact and is usually brought out of winter storage and set up and anchored on the Baldeneysee more than a week before the start of the competitions. In 2025, the issue concerns the immediate surroundings of the competitions on land. The regatta grandstand was already demolished in 2024. The new one is not scheduled for completion until 2026.
