History of Technology to Experience – The Nikolaus Express of Hespertalbahn on Baldeneysee 2026

The trips with the diesel locomotive of the Hespertalbahn association are a special experience for all who seek railway romance away from the mainstream. While steam locomotive trips are often the focus, the diesel locomotive offers an equally fascinating, but entirely unique atmosphere. The association primarily uses it on days when there are no steam trips – and thus still enables authentic tours on the historic route between Essen-Kupferdreh and Haus Scheppen through the idyllic Hespertal valley.

Journey through nature and industrial culture

The route of the Hespertalbahn runs along the southern Baldeneyseeand into a valley once shaped by ore mining. Today, the landscape appears green, peaceful, and surprisingly wild. The diesel locomotive pulls the historic carriages at a leisurely pace through nature, past old railway lines, relics of mining, and dense rows of trees. The journey is deliberately unhurried – ideal for letting the surroundings have their effect. The sonorous hum of the diesel locomotive, the steady clatter of the rails, and the view of the wooded slopes create an atmosphere usually only familiar from old films.

Historical Technology in Motion

The club's diesel locomotives come from a time when robust technology and simple mechanics shaped railway operations. Many of these machines were once used in shunting services or in mining. Today, they have been lovingly restored and are maintained and operated by club members. Visitors not only experience a ride, but can also gain insights into the technology if they wish: How does a diesel engine of this type work? What were the locomotive's former tasks? And why are such vehicles so rare today? The volunteers are happy to explain – and with palpable passion.

Excursion for the whole family

The diesel locomotive rides on Baldeneyseeare a straightforward, family-friendly experience. Children marvel at the powerful locomotive, while adults enjoy the blend of nostalgia and nature. The rides are perfect for a weekend getaway, a short trip back in time, or as an addition to a visit to the Ruhr area with a detour to Villa Hügel and Baldeneysee. For railway enthusiasts, the diesel rides are also a highlight: they offer the opportunity to experience historic vehicles in action – something that is hardly possible in regular rail traffic.

Tips for the St. Nicholas Express

The St. Nicholas Express is a very special experience – and tickets are exclusively available through advance online sales. Children aged 1 and up can receive a lovingly filled St. Nicholas bag for €13.50, while adults travel for €11.00. A processing fee of €4.50 applies per order.

The journey starts at the old Kupferdreh train station. In the festively decorated carriages, a journey full of anticipation begins, lasting around 75 minutes. Along the way, St. Nicholas and Knecht Ruprecht board, giving gifts to the children and accepting wish lists, which – if the sender's handwriting is legible – will even be answered.

Music and winter drinks will ensure a warm, cheerful atmosphere. All you need to bring is a good mood – the onboard ambiance will take care of the rest.

The pre-sale for 2027 is expected to start on December 14, 2026.

Season and mood along the route

The diesel locomotive is primarily used when steam train rides are not taking place – for example, on selected weekends or during special events. The atmosphere at the small stations is always special: people wait eagerly, children wave to the locomotive, and as soon as the train starts moving, that typical feeling of being part of a historical adventure arises.

Conclusion: Authentic, nostalgic, and surprisingly relaxed

The diesel locomotive excursions of Hespertalbahn e.V. are a piece of the Ruhr region that you can ride and experience. They combine nature, technical history, and club passion into an unforgettable experience. Anyone visiting the region around Baldeneysee should not miss this special trip.
