Hermanns Blick

Hermanns Blickalso known as Hermannsblick, is a vantage point above Lake Baldeney. The otherwise nameless spot on the north side of Lake Baldeney is said to have been named 'Hermanns Blick' by a group of hikers in the 1990s. More on this later. Located in the 'Schellenberger Wald' forest in the south of Essen, Hermanns Blick can only be reached on foot or by bike.

The Hermanns Blick is located below the leisure facility 'Emil Frick Heim' and above the 'Seaside Beach Baldeney', the 'Seeblick D' and the snack bar and kiosk 'Tango am Baldeneysee'. Nearby are Baldeney Castle with the 'Remise' and the castle chapel, the 'Magdalenen Kapelle', the 'Baldeneyer Fähre', a formerly popular restaurant building that has been closed for years, as well as the 'Gartenrestaurant am See, Café und Grill' and the 'Anleger Seeblick', specially built for the flagship of the 'Weiße Flotte', the 'MS Innogy'.

Path to the Hermanns Blick

The viewpoint at Hermanns Blick can be reached via an unpaved path that branches off at an acute angle from Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße to the right of Tango am Baldeneysee and leads upwards. Sturdy footwear is recommended in view of the sometimes loose ground. On a path that has been washed out by the rain, the trail runs parallel to Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße below for around 400 meters up to Hermanns Blick. When the sprawling greenery around you thins out and a wall secures the path to the left, Hermanns Blick is as good as reached.

Hermann's friends

From Hermanns Blick , the eye wanders eastwards to the Essen district of Heisingen. The fields and forests of the Fischlaken and Werden districts can be seen directly opposite. White paint was used to paint Hermanns Blick on the stones below the view. The letters "Alfo" can just be made out underneath. They refer to Alfons Horn, who is said to have occasionally walked past here with his friends. In an interview with the local radio station 'Radio Essen', he explains the origin of the name 'Hermanns Blick', stating that they named the viewpoint after their then deceased companion Hermann in 1993 and then painted the name on the wall three years later.

A place for lovers

However, it is not only hikers who enjoy the viewpoint, which offers a panoramic view for the first time after trails through densely overgrown forests. The viewpoint Hermanns Blick offers lovers seclusion in a wildly romantic setting. Two trees at Hermanns Blick, the bark of which has been immortalized by many lovers, bear witness to this.

Parking near Hermanns Blick

If you only want to go to the viewpoint Hermanns Blick , you should ideally park your car in the free public parking spaces on Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße near Seaside Beach Baldeney. Walkers and hikers automatically reach the viewpoint Hermanns Blick if they follow the Schellenberger Wald circular hiking trail (signposted A3).
