Essen will be a stage finish for the professional cyclists in August 2023.
On August 26th, the Deutschland Tour will stop in Essen. Twenty professional teams – including 14 teams from this year's Tour de France – are expected to arrive in Essen for the third stage from Arnsberg, starting at 4:30 pm. The Expo Tour, a cycling-related exhibition for all enthusiasts, will open at 1 pm at the stage finish on Huyssenallee. In addition, a diverse program of events for all ages will draw visitors to Essen's city center, before the excitement reaches its peak around 5:30 pm with the final sprint of the third stage.
Top-class field of drivers
Germany's only stage race for elite male cyclists boasts a top-class field this year. Twenty professional cycling teams have registered a total of 120 riders, including 14 teams that competed in this year's Tour de France, the world's most important cycling race. Among those expected to participate are riders such as Nils Politt, Maximilian Schachmann (both BORA – hansgrohe), Adam Yates, Pascal Ackermann (both UAE Team Emirates), Pello Bilbao, Phil Bauhaus (both Bahrain Victorious), Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar Team), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny), and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) – to name just a few. They will start on August 26, 2023, at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the Essen district. Kettwig expected and drive past Hugenpoet Castle up Meisenburgstrasse towards the city center circuit.
Professional road cycling up close
Anyone who missed the Tour de France this year has the chance to experience professional cycling up close and get a taste of the peloton atmosphere right here in Essen, practically on their doorstep. The Deutschland Tour will take place from August 23rd to 27th as a five-day stage race in the UCI ProSeries, the competition below the WorldTour. After the prologue, a time trial in Sankt Wendel, the professional cyclists will ride 732 kilometers through five German states, finishing in Bremen on August 27th, 2023.
Room for the peloton
Images of cars parked in parking lots near stage towns and along the race route are already familiar from the Tour de France. Where the peloton and support vehicles like equipment trucks need space, road traffic comes to a standstill for a while. The temporary road closures for the Deutschland Tour are also a mammoth task that requires the understanding of other road users. Therefore, motorists and residents should expect disruptions on August 26, 2023, and either avoid the city center or park their cars and attend the cycling spectacle.
