The Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen-Werden at Baldeneysee Folkwang University of the Arts is a renowned institution for training international talent. Since 1927, it has combined interdisciplinary education in various art forms and disciplines such as music, musical theatre, theatre, dance, design, and science. Doctoral studies are possible. The campus is located at Klemensborn 39, 45239 Essen, Germany. Classes are held in historic buildings that are centuries and even millennia old. Students in the design department, on the other hand, work at the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex. The Folkwang University of the Arts at Baldeneysee has produced a number of internationally acclaimed artists.
Historic Campus Essen-Werden
Studying at the Folkwang University of the Arts means learning and creating within historic walls. The main campus is located in the baroque building of the Benedictine abbey at Werden (Old Abbey Werden), whose origins date back to 799 AD. The Musical department is located in the Neukircher Mill (White Mill). Another building is the Old School at Wesselswerth. All buildings are listed as historical monuments. This unique setting is undoubtedly an inspiring place for artistic and scientific studies.

Modern studios and libraries
In addition to its historic buildings, the Folkwang University of the Arts in Werden offers state-of-the-art recording studios and an outstanding musicological library with an impressive collection, catering to the various disciplines: instrumental training, composition, church music, singing, conducting, music education, musicology, teaching, dance, choreography, kinetography-Laban, acting, acting-directing and physical theatre (formerly pantomime).
From education to a global career
The university has produced renowned graduates, including Hans Zimmer, celebrated worldwide for his film scores; Pina Bausch, who revolutionized dance theatre; as well as musician Herbert Grönemeyer and choreographer Sasha Waltz – to name just a few. Legend has it that musician Jason Luís Cheetham, also known as Jay Kay of the band Jamiroquai, attended Folkwang University for a time. Back then, the Jamiroquai logo, a stylized silhouette of the musician as a buffalo man, appeared painted on signs and lampposts in various locations in Werden.
