ETUF Center Court becomes an arena for world-class tennis
Essen, Baldeneysee, July 15, 2025. From July 16 to 27, 2025, the world of elite student sports will gather in the Rhine-Ruhr region for the FISU World University Games, one of the world's largest multi-sport events. Over 8,500 athletes from more than 150 nations will compete in 18 disciplines. A sports venue at Baldeneysee in Essen will become the vibrant heart of the FISU World University Games tennis competitions in 2025. At the same time, few places embody the connection between sporting tradition and scenic beauty as impressively as the grounds of the Essen Gymnastics and Fencing Club (ETUF) on the north bank of the... Baldeneysee.
Between sea breeze and sandy court
The ETUF tennis club, steeped in tradition and deeply rooted in the region, welcomes guests with a truly special flair. The tennis house – a historic gem with Mediterranean cuisine and panoramic views of both the Center Court and the Baldeneysee – serves as a meeting point and the organizational hub for the event. Between the sea breeze and the backdrop of the clay courts, tennis fans and participants will experience a tennis festival that promises to be both elegant and energetic.
WTA and ATP athletes
The ETUF Center Court has been meticulously prepared and spruced up for this occasion: the stands gleam in a fresh, blue and white design, and the courts are in top condition. Around 1,500 spectators can enjoy the opportunity to cheer on top international players – including WTA and ATP athletes ranked as high as the top 150 in the world. Representing Germany are, among others, Gina Dittmann and Nino Toto, whose sporting roots are directly connected to ETUF – a story that combines sporting greatness with regional ties.

Back to the roots
Gina Dittmann, born in Essen in 2002, began playing tennis at the age of six – specifically on the ETUF grounds at court Baldeneysee. The ETUF tennis team is therefore her sporting home, and it will once again play a central role in her career at the FISU World University Games 2025. "This is very special for me, as it's my tennis home and where I took many of my first steps in the sport," Gina Dittmann is quoted as saying. It's a nice circle that will close at the FISU University Games 2025 on Center Court Baldeneysee.

Center Court inauguration with show mixed doubles
For Nino Toto (24), participating in the University Games is not only significant from a sporting perspective. The sports science student at Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) has a connection to ETUF Essen and its tennis team. At the festive opening of the newly renovated ETUF Center Court, Nino Toto, along with Gina Dittmann, Jonas Pelle Hartenstein, and Monique Murek, inaugurated the court with a mixed doubles exhibition match – a symbolic kickoff to the tournament on the Baldeneysee court.

FISU sports facilities in Essen
But tennis is just one chapter in Essen's university sports summer history. It's worth mentioning in passing that fencing, rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis, and taekwondo are held at the Essen Trade Fair, basketball in the Grugahalle and the Am Hallo sports park, and archery at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex – a diversity that transforms the city into a vibrant microcosm of the global University Games.
Our conclusion
So, anyone who happens to be on the banks of the Baldeneysees between the regatta tower and in July 2025 Dam Werden is a place of leisure, moving in close proximity to top athletic performances and intercultural encounters. Those seeking peace and quiet, however, might be better off avoiding this area at this time. For as part of FISU World University Games 2025, the grounds of the Essen Gymnastics and Fencing Club will become the hub for top-level university tennis. Baldeneysee.Ruhr encountered a player from Brazil this morning on the edge of the grounds, who will also be competing at Baldeneysee: amidst serves, applause, and a vibrant atmosphere.
