How bats communicate and why they are only active at night – Bat tours 2026
The meeting point for the 2026 bat tours is the Kupferdreh market in Essen- Kupferdreh, from where the exciting discovery tour around Baldeneysee begins. Bats communicate using high-frequency calls that are inaudible to humans without technical aids. During the tour, participants will use an ultrasound receiver to locate the various bat species that inhabit forests, fields, meadows, and bodies of water.
A central part of the tour is the question of why bats fly exclusively at night and how they navigate using echolocation. Participants gain fascinating insights into the behavior, communication, and lifestyle of these extraordinary animals.
Roosting sites and winter quarters will remain deliberately undisturbed, as they are under strict protection. Since bats hibernate, the bat tours in 2026 will take place exclusively during the warmer months, from mid-April to mid-October.
