The beginnings with the Baldeneysee

The origins of Essen Sailing Week date back to 1953, when the first sailing regattas were held at Baldeneysee These events took place – organized by dedicated sailors from various Essen sailing clubs. They laid the foundation for what would later become a firmly established institution in regional water sports: Essen Sailing Week. In 1957, Sailing Week was officially established under this name, driven primarily by the Essen Yacht Club (EYC). The initiator, Alfred Scheepers, is said to have played a key role: with his passion for sailing... Sailing With his organizational talent, he transformed the individual regattas into a unified event that combined sporting competition and social interaction. The Essen Sailing Week was born.

The sailing week experienced a significant upswing in the 1970s. Youth boat classes like the Optimist and 420 made the event particularly attractive to young sailors. International participants also contributed to the increasing popularity and importance of the sailing week. In the 1980s, the event was further professionalized: electronic timing, new competition structures, and the involvement of the city of Essen ensured smooth operation and strengthened the sailing week's position as an established sailing event. Despite the competitive demands, the event retained its friendly, family atmosphere.

Environmental awareness and sustainability are central components: from resource-efficient setup and dismantling to waste prevention and educational programs for children and young people. More than a competition

Music, regional cuisine, and family-friendly activities accompany the sporting competitions. The event has long since become a fixture on Essen's event calendar – not only for sailors, but for everyone who wants to enjoy the special atmosphere at the Baldeneysee.
