German Junior and Age Group Championships U17, U19 and U23
Cologne, June 22, 2025. For four days, Fühlinger See transformed into the vibrant heart of German youth rowing. From June 19 to 22, 2025, the German Junior and Age Group Championships for U17, U19, and U23 took place here – with over 1,200 athletes from 197 rowing clubs competing in thrilling races under sweltering heat. Teams from all over Germany arrived as early as Wednesday to familiarize themselves with the course during initial training sessions. From Thursday onward, it was full steam ahead. Every centimeter was fought for in the heats and repechages before the finals over the weekend, where gold, silver, and bronze were at stake.
Heat battle and obstacles
The conditions were extreme: On Sunday, the thermometer in the Cologne Bay area climbed to 40 degrees Celsius (measured at their own cars). The athletes cooled and protected themselves with damp towels, cooling sleeves, and makeshift hats fashioned from technical shirts. Spectators took advantage of every patch of shade along the regatta course. But it wasn't just the heat that was demanding – the lively recreational activity around the lake district also led to some rather bizarre scenes. Racing boats navigated their way through a labyrinth of SUPs, air mattresses, and swimmers. The smell of barbecues filled the air as race briefings were held. Smoke drifted over the racing boats waiting on the meadows for their turn.

A terrifying moment briefly overshadowed the proceedings: rowers reported that a swimmer jumped from a bridge directly onto a single scull passing below. "That was a shock for all of us. It could have ended very badly," said a coach, shaking his head and visibly moved. A dramatic example of what can happen when two worlds collide – as was the case here.
Top performances from Essen
The rowers from Essen also shone particularly brightly. The clubs EWRC, ETUF Ruderriege, TVK, Kettwiger RG and RaB from Essen all performed exceptionally well. Baldeneysee Rowers from Essen and the Ruhr region made their presence felt on the podium in numerous boat classes, winning gold, silver, and bronze medals. One example: the Junior B coxed four, competing in the racing suits of the Essen Rowing and Regatta Club (Essener Ruder- und Regattaverein e.V.), comprised of Junior B rowers from the Kettwig Rowing Club (Kettwiger RG), RaB, and EWRC. In a nail-biting finish, the four Essen boys and their coxswain prevailed against Berlin, nearly catching the previously clear leader from Krefeld/Düsseldorf, who just barely managed to cross the finish line – a well-deserved title as German Vice Champions. "This crew has developed incredibly in recent weeks. Second place feels like gold today."„

Emotions all the way to the finish line
Commentated by Michael Hein and Boris Orlowski, who guided the audience through the program with expertise and passion, many races – like the one described earlier – were only decided in the final meters. Supported by drone footage and the live stream on Sportdeutschland.tv (Baldeneysee.Ruhr reported), even those at home could experience the drama up close. Along the course, coaches on bicycles cheered on their athletes – the larger the boat class, the larger the coaching contingent.

Cologne proved to be a worthy host, offering an unforgettable weekend for up-and-coming rowers and German rowing as a whole, despite the heat and challenges.
