Essen will be a stage finish for professional cyclists in August 2023
On August 26, the Deutschland Tour will stop off in Essen. 20 professional teams - including 14 teams from this year's Tour de France - are expected in Essen on the third stage from Arnsberg to Essen from 4.30 pm. The Expo Tour, a bicycle-related exhibition for all interested parties, will open at the stage finish in Huyssenalle at 1 pm. In addition, a supporting program appealing to all age groups will be held in Essen's city centre before the excitement reaches its climax at the final sprint of the third stage at around 5.30 pm.
Top-class field of drivers
Germany's only stage race for elite male cyclists will feature a top-class field of riders this year. 20 professional road bike teams have registered a total of 120 riders, including 14 teams alone that took part in this year's Tour de France, the world's most important cycling race. Riders such as Nils Politt, Maximilian Schachmann (both BORA - hansgrohe), Adam Yates, Pascal Ackermann (both UAE Team Emirates), Pello Bilbao, Phil Bauhaus (both Bahrain Victorious), Ruben Guerreiro (Movistar Team), Mads Pedersen (Lidl-Trek), Caleb Ewan (Lotto Dstny) and Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Pro Cycling Team) - to name but a few. They are expected to arrive in the Kettwig district of Essen at around 4.30 p.m. on August 26, 2023 and ride past Hugenpoet Castle up Meisenburgstraße towards the city center circuit.
Professional racing cycling up close
So if you weren't able to attend the Tour de France live, this year you have the chance to experience professional cycling up close and get a taste of the peloton in Essen, right on your own doorstep. The Deutschland Tour will be held this year from August 23 to 27 as a five-day stage race in the UCI ProSeries, the competition below the WorldTour. After the prologue, a time trial in Sankt Wendel, the professional cyclists will ride 732 kilometers through five German states to the finish in Bremen on 27 August 2023.
Space for the peloton
From the Tour de France, we are already familiar with the images of parked cars in parking lots near the stage towns and on the edge of the race route. Because where the peloton and support vehicles such as equipment vans need space, road traffic comes to a standstill for a while. Even at the Deutschland Tour, the temporary closure of roads is a mammoth task that cannot be accomplished without the understanding of other road users. Road users and residents should therefore be prepared for restrictions on August 26, 2023 and avoid the city center area or park their car and visit the cycling spectacle.
