Choosing the right bicycle is crucial for riding comfort, safety, and suitability for different uses. There are many types of bicycles available, varying depending on intended use, terrain, and budget.
| bicycle type | Description |
|---|---|
| wheels | Not real bicycles, as they lack pedals and a motor, but for the youngest children, they are the best introduction to getting around on two wheels. They promote motor development and balance. Children who are confident on balance bikes learn to ride a bicycle more quickly. |
| City bikes | Ideal for city traffic. Comfortable seating position, equipped with a luggage rack, mudguards, lights and reflectors for road safety. |
| racing bikes | Lightweight, fast, and aerodynamically built for high speeds on asphalt. Perfect for sporty drivers. |
| Gravel bikes | A combination of road bike and mountain bike. Suitable for tours on gravel roads, forest paths and easy terrain. |
| Mountain bikes | Robust bikes with suspension for unpaved roads and trails. Available as a hardtail (suspension only in the fork) or full-suspension (suspension in both the fork and frame). |
| Trekking bikes | Designed for long tours. Comfortable features, luggage rack and good lighting. Popular with touring cyclists. |
| cargo bikes | For transporting heavy loads or children. Sturdy construction, often with electric assistance. Particularly common in the Netherlands. |

Health benefits of cycling
Cycling is one of the healthiest and most efficient forms of exercise. It has a positive impact on many aspects of health. The cardiovascular system, for example, benefits from cycling, as it improves blood circulation and reduces the risk of heart disease. Muscles and joints are strengthened gently because the weight is not borne by the legs but distributed across the handlebars, saddle, and pedals. Cycling primarily strengthens the leg muscles, as well as the lower abdominal and back muscles. When climbing hills, the so-called "standing pedal" (getting out of the saddle) transforms cycling into a full-body workout. Cyclists stimulate their metabolism, and after about half an hour, the body begins to burn excess calories. Exercise in nature contributes to stress reduction, promotes mental health, and has a positive effect on overall well-being. Last but not least, a correct riding position and optimal posture can improve posture and even prevent muscle tension.
Safety in road traffic and on the lake circuit
Safety should be a priority when cycling in road traffic in general and on the bike path. Lake round Safety should always be a top priority. The right equipment is an important step towards being optimally prepared for traffic. Road-legal equipment with functioning lights, reflectors, and good brakes is essential. A properly fitting, certified helmet protects against falls, while reflective clothing increases visibility even in poor lighting conditions. Special cycling gloves improve grip and protect the hands in case of falls. In addition to protective clothing, correct and anticipatory behavior in traffic is of great importance. This includes observing the traffic rules: yielding the right-of-way, obeying traffic lights, and signaling when turning. It's better to brake too often than to risk an accident. Anticipatory riding and maintaining a safe distance avoid dangerous situations – especially on the Baldeneysee, where pedestrians, children, Inline skaters, Joggers, dog walkers, scooter riders, and people using walkers are all out and about. A defensive driving style avoids unpleasant experiences, accidents with and without personal injury, and unnecessary hassle.
Basic equipment for cyclists
A bicycle alone is usually not enough – with the right equipment, the ride becomes more comfortable and safer. Bicycle lights should be properly attached and switched on from dusk onwards. LED lights are energy-efficient and ensure good visibility. They are rechargeable and quickly removable if the bicycle needs to be parked. Mudguards are essential in rain or on muddy paths. High-quality locks can protect against theft. However, it is advisable to leave and lock your bicycle within sight of the Baldeneysee beer garden whenever possible. High-end bikes, in particular, are attractive targets. Racks and panniers are ideal for transporting shopping or small items. An air pump and tool kit, including a multi-tool, spare inner tube, and tire levers, are important for minor repairs on the go. In the neighborhoods around the Baldeneysee, there are several bicycle shops with bicycle repair services and even two tire vending machines that provide replacements in an emergency. Food and drink are also important: always pack water and an emergency muesli or energy bar; for longer rides, of course, pack more. Because if the body runs out of energy, nothing works anymore very quickly.
Equipment for day trips and multi-day tours
Longer bike tours require special preparation. What to take, where to get there, and where to stay? The Ruhr Valley and the Baldeneysee are cycling paradises and part of the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route. Many restaurants and hotels cater to cyclists and offer secure bike storage and drying rooms for equipment. In addition, there are campsites For overnight stays in tents. Recommended equipment for day trips and multi-day tours includes lightweight and quick-drying functional cycling clothing, consisting of cycling shorts with a chamois, breathable base layers or jerseys, weatherproof and breathable jackets, and possibly rain pants and neoprene shoe covers. Waterproof panniers are especially important for tours with luggage. Anyone planning a multi-day tour should not only test their equipment but, above all, train their fitness beforehand. Those who start from scratch without training risk their tour coming to an abrupt end due to neck pain, saddle sores, or knee pain.
Bicycle-friendly hosts
GPS-enabled navigation devices or maps are helpful for orientation, especially if signage is lacking. A compact first-aid kit with plasters, disinfectant spray, and bandages is essential for emergency equipment and helps with minor injuries. In the Ruhr Valley and along the Baldeneysee, there are numerous doctors and hospitals that guarantee rapid assistance in case of more serious injuries. Those planning to camp outdoors will also need camping equipment, including a tent, sleeping bag, and camping stove. Some campsites in the Ruhr Valley and along the Baldeneysee rent out caravans, mobile homes, camping barrels, holiday homes, or rental tents, eliminating the need to bring bulky overnight gear. Those traveling during the summer season should book well in advance.
Kids are coming along
Transporting small children safely on a bicycle used to be quite a challenge. Today, many manufacturers have developed a wide range of accessories to make it easier for new parents to quickly get back to cycling with young children. This specialized equipment includes child seats that can be mounted directly onto the bicycle and are ideal for short distances once the child can sit securely on their own and hold on. Bicycle trailers are comfortable for longer journeys. Additional infant carriers provide extra support for even very young children. With a sleeping bag and hot water bottle, little ones can be transported warm and dry even in colder temperatures and rain. Behind the seat, there is additional storage space for diapers and other essentials. Some child trailers even come with suspension. Our Dutch neighbors have shown us the way: cargo bikes are a stable and safe alternative where children sit in the front, within sight. The only drawback: cargo bikes usually have a larger turning radius. If children can already ride themselves but don't yet have the stamina for long rides, tag-along bikes or tandem bars can be helpful.
Our conclusion: Cycling – a wonderful feeling of life
Cycling is far more than just a means of transportation – it offers a blend of freedom, fun, and fitness. Whether as an everyday means of transport, a sports tool, or for adventure trips: with the right bike and equipment, countless possibilities open up. Anyone who has ever experienced the feeling of traversing landscapes under their own muscle power will never want to give up cycling. In heavily frequented recreational areas like the Baldeneysee, the rule is: slow down and be more considerate.
