A culinary journey around the Baldeneysee and through the Ruhr Valley
Welcome to Baldeneysee – formerly a region where the heart beat deep in the earth, resulting in a cuisine as diverse as in few other places. The Benedictines in the Old Abbey Werden As early as the 12th century, they brought their knowledge of ingredients and preparation methods to the Ruhr Valley. Later, the mining region not only extracted coal, but also, almost incidentally, unearthed an unparalleled treasure trove of flavors, stories, and cultures. Here, Ruhr classics met Mediterranean influences: hearty kale stews met fragrant garlic dishes, and Mettwurst (a type of German sausage) met oregano.
A tribute to the Ruhr region
The RecipeThe "Ruhr" section on Baldeneysee is a tribute to this lived diversity – to the hardworking hands of the miners as well as the warmth of the guest worker families from Italy, Greece, Turkey, Poland, and Spain. Their spices, techniques, and zest for life have uniquely transformed the regional cuisine of the Ruhr area, giving it a globally unique, international appeal.
Wild-grown ingredients
But we dig even deeper: In addition to classic, traditional dishes, we also want to shed light on the treasures of nature surrounding the Baldeneysee and the Ruhr Valley – wild-growing herbs, regional superfoods, forgotten ingredients. They inspire healthy, sustainable, and unexpectedly delicious dishes that not only benefit the body but also the region. What doesn't grow wild is cultivated in private gardens or on rented fields by farmers on the Ruhr heights and is available in farm shops and local supermarkets.
