European championship at the Gyros Grill
Chip shops are really rare in southern Essen. There are only one or two snack bars in the individual districts around the Baldeneysee Representing the area are two Greeks who really know their stuff when it comes to snack bars: Werdener and Brückengrill. This tiny snack bar has been a fixture for years next to the Gustav Heinemann Bridge and not far from Baldeneysee. Especially on days when day-trippers flock to the Ruhr Valley and the neighboring school is on its lunch break, Brückengrill is packed. The owners handle the large crowds calmly and efficiently. The "Pommes Spezial" (special fries) are recommended as a side dish or light main course. Here, the Greeks use red onions instead of the usual white ones. Vegetarians can order Saganaki, baked feta cheese with salad in pita bread, or a mixed salad from the well-stocked refrigerated display case.
