Fascinating animals and their threatened habitats

Bats are fascinating mammals with amazing abilities and play a vital role in the ecosystem. These nocturnal creatures are capable of flight and use echolocation to navigate in the dark and locate their food. Unfortunately, many bat species are now threatened, especially in urban and densely populated areas where their natural habitat is increasingly restricted by human activities. Despite these challenges, there are still some places where bats are native – including at Baldeneysee, in the heart of the Ruhr region, the so-called Ruhr Metropolis.

Bat oasis at Baldeneysee

The Baldeneysee area in southern Essen, nestled in the once industrial and urban landscape of the Ruhr region, might not initially seem like a refuge for bats. Yet – precisely here – lies a veritable bat oasis. The combination of water, forests, and open green spaces offers bats ideal conditions for hunting, resting, and breeding. In the evenings, various bat species can be observed here, becoming active at dusk and performing impressive aerial maneuvers.

First-hand bat knowledge

For anyone who would like to learn more about these fascinating animals, the Grün und Gruga office in Essen is offering a program from April to September 2025. Bat tours around the Baldeneysee Under the expert guidance of an experienced bat specialist, participants gain deeper insights into the life and behavior of bats. They learn everything worth knowing about different species, their habits, and the challenges they face in a constantly changing world.

Dates and further information

The bat tours are not only an opportunity to experience these animals up close, but also an important contribution to raising public awareness about the protection of these endangered species. The tours take place between April and September 2025, precisely when the bats are most active. Those interested can find all current dates and further information about the bat tours at Baldeneysee on the website Baldeneysee.Ruhr.

Organizer and upper limit

Probably the most scenic Marathon Germany's marathon is organized on a voluntary basis by the athletics department of TUSEM Essen. The marathon is limited to 3,000 runners, making it almost intimate compared to other events. A marathon perfectly suited for getting a taste of running and achieving a personal best.
