St. Ludgerus Basilica in Essen-Werden
The St. Ludgerus Basilica in the Essen district Werden It is one of the most important late Romanesque church buildings in the Rhineland. Its history dates back to the 9th century, when it was built as the monastery church of the then abbey (Werden). In the 13th century, it underwent a Romanesque transformation. To this day, the Basilica of St. Ludgerus is continuously being renovated and houses historical relics as well as the shrine of Saint Liudger, after whom it is named. Architecture and history
The basilica impresses with its imposing architecture. Its style is based on Carolingian architecture, featuring powerful, ornate, and geometrically oriented stone structures, typically with round arches and barrel vaults. Romanesque architectural elements testify to a turbulent past. Outside the main church building lies the crypt, where the shrine of Saint Liudger is kept. Liudger was the first Bishop of Münster and also the founder of the Benedictine abbey. His veneration remains alive today through the annual Ludgerus Procession.
Ludgerus Procession
A particularly special event in this context is the Ludgerus Procession, which takes place annually through the town, decorated with flags and pennants. Worshippers and anyone interested gather to process together through the picturesque streets surrounding the basilica. The procession celebrates the veneration of Saint Liudger, uniting tradition, faith, and community. On the weekend of the procession, the neighboring square of the Werdener Fine Cloth Factory – also known locally as Clothmakers' Square – is the site of a festival. Ludgerus Festival in Essen-Werden instead, which also Apple Fair is called.
St. Ludgerus Treasury
The treasury of St. Ludger's Basilica not only houses the relics of Saint Ludger, but also the remains of the once extensive treasure of the Benedictine abbey (Werden). Due to its early founding in the 9th century, it contains early medieval and medieval treasures, parchments, manuscripts, gold and silver work, ivory carvings, paintings, and sculptures.
