A century in the service of saving lives on the Ruhr and Baldeneysee
In 2025, the DLRG Essen district association will celebrate a very special anniversary: Its members have been committed to lifesaving for 100 years. German Life Saving Association in Essen For safety in and around the water. What began in 1925 with a small, ambitious group of dedicated rescuers is today a modern, efficient organization of great importance to public life in the city and its waterways such as the Ruhr and the ITP125T.
A look back at an eventful century
The DLRG Essen district was founded at a time when learning to swim and going swimming were not commonplace. Its primary goal was therefore to prevent drowning, teach the population how to swim, and provide first aid training. Over the decades, the local branch has developed into an indispensable part of emergency response in Essen – whether during floods or at events. Baldeneysee and on the Ruhr. Another increasingly important area of activity is certainly disaster relief.
Volunteering and engagement
The voluntary commitment of its members is what distinguishes an organization like the DLRG Essen. Early mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends – naturally, precisely when others are enjoying their leisure time at the Baldeneysee – DLRG members are on duty. Whether providing safety coverage for sporting events like dragon boat races, rowing or canoeing regattas, teaching children to swim, or responding to emergencies – these volunteers certainly bring passion to the table, but their help is invaluable because they have acquired sound expertise, which they selflessly apply for the benefit of others. This commitment was recognized at the ceremony at the Baldeneysee, where, in addition to Essen's Mayor Thomas Kufen, numerous guests from politics and society expressed their appreciation.
Anniversary ceremony
The 100th anniversary was celebrated with a grand ceremony. In addition to greetings from the mayor and other distinguished guests, there was a unique program featuring music, demonstrations, and, of course, plenty of water-based activities. The event was not only a look back at the past but also a glimpse into the future. The goal is to inspire even more young people to get involved in the important work of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG). It's not just athletic individuals who are needed, for example, as lifeguards – everyone is welcome and can contribute to the diverse and multifaceted tasks of the DLRG, become part of a community, and, along the way, learn a great deal that they can apply to other situations in life.
Beach party on June 21, 2025
At the beach party in Seaside Beach Baldeney, At the outdoor swimming pool with beach at Baldeneysee, families, teenagers, retirees, and everyone else are invited to join the festivities on June 21, 2025, experience the work of the German Life Saving Association (DLRG), and get involved themselves. Water activities and numerous hands-on events will provide fun and plenty of cooling, as temperatures are expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius on Saturday. Since it's naturally a few degrees cooler in the unspoiled natural surroundings at Baldeneysee than in the more urbanized parts of town, Baldeneysee is the place to be anyway.

A look into the future
Even after 100 years, the DLRG Essen district sees its mission as relevant as ever: saving lives, training people, ensuring safety, and providing disaster relief. In a time when swimming ability among the population has declined significantly, teaching and learning to swim has once again become a major focus, making the work of the DLRG more important than ever. The organization is committed to ensuring that as many people as possible – regardless of age or background – learn to swim safely and are able to help in emergencies.
A century of volunteer service deserves our utmost respect. The DLRG Essen is a prime example of how volunteer work strengthens our society, ultimately benefiting everyone – then as now.
