Every Wednesday evening, Lake Baldeney in the south of Essen transforms into a sailing area when the Wednesday regatta of the Seglerkameradschaft Scheppen begins. Since 2005, this regular race has developed into a permanent institution in the Ruhr area. What once started as a sporting training opportunity for club members is today an open and at the same time ambitious event that attracts sailors of almost all boat classes and experience levels. The mix of sporting ambition, a relaxed atmosphere, and the special scenery of Lake Baldeney makes the regatta a weekly highlight for many water sports enthusiasts.

Already in the late afternoon, the SKS grounds fill with life. Boats are launched, masts and sails are checked, and final trim adjustments are made. The atmosphere is focused, but not tense. Many have known each other for years, others are participating for the first time – and yet, a sense of community immediately arises. When the boats finally gather on the water and the start draws nearer, a special tension is in the air. The Baldeneysee often shows its varied side: sometimes a steady wind blows across the water, sometimes a capricious shift challenges the sailors. It is precisely this unpredictability that makes the area so appealing.

The Wednesday Regatta is intentionally low-threshold. Anyone who owns a seaworthy boat and enjoys sporty camaraderie can participate. Experienced regatta sailors use the series to refine their maneuvers and prepare for larger competitions. Recreational sailors, in turn, appreciate the opportunity to gain their first regatta experience without great pressure and in their home waters. Young people and club juniors can also expand their skills here under real competitive conditions. The fact that sailors from surrounding clubs such as ETUF or Segelclub Najade regularly participate shows how far the event's appeal extends.

For the races to run smoothly, clear rules apply. The Ruhr Navigation Ordinance stipulates that the buoyed fairway may only be crossed directly and that motorized vessels – especially the White Fleet – always have priority. The SKS ensures that these regulations are adhered to, as safety and mutual consideration are the cornerstones of the Wednesday Regatta. At the same time, the well-rehearsed organization team ensures that the start, course setting, and timing run professionally.

After crossing the finish line, hardly anyone returns home immediately. Instead, sailors and spectators meet on the club grounds. Over a drink, maneuvers are discussed, wind shifts analyzed, and minor mishaps are commented on with a laugh. This social aspect is almost as important to many as the race itself. It creates connections, fosters exchange between experienced and new sailors, and makes the Wednesday regatta a social gathering that certainly goes far beyond the sporting aspect.

The fascination of the Wednesday Regatta lies in its mix of tradition, athletic challenge, and relaxed community. It offers regular competitive practice without appearing elitist. It brings together people who share a passion for sailing. And week after week, it shows how vibrant water sports are in the Ruhr region. Those who have participated, whether on a boat or on the shore, quickly understand why this regatta has become a fixed part of their sailing summer.

On September 27, 2026, the Sportgemeinschaft Ruhr 1929 e.V. – Sailing Division (SGRS) invites you to the Opti Ruhr-Cup in the Optimist C boat class on the Baldeneysee. Young sailing talents will compete against each other in a friendly atmosphere and gain valuable regatta experience.

The cup is dedicated entirely to youth development and offers children a great stage for their first sporting achievements. Spectators and families can look forward to a lively event with a breath of fresh air and a lot of enthusiasm on the water.

On October 3, 2026, the Essener Yacht-Club e.V. (EYC) invites you to the 22nd Classic Rendezvous on Lake Baldeney – a stylish gathering of traditional wooden boats to mark the public holiday. Lovingly preserved or faithfully replicated yachts that are over 30 years old and built in classic craftsmanship with frames and planking are eligible to participate.

Modern materials such as mylar or Kevlar as well as technical hiking aids are deliberately excluded in order to preserve the originality of these boats. The rendezvous celebrates the elegance and history of traditional boatbuilding and offers an atmospheric sailing experience that combines maritime cultural heritage with sporting passion.

From June to October 2026, the Dingerkus Garden House invites visitors on the 1st Sunday of every month during open visiting hours. Between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM, guests can freely explore the Baroque building and its idyllic garden in the Essen district of Werden near the Ruhr and Lake Baldeney.

The Dingerkus garden house is a rare example of 18th-century bourgeois garden architecture—a quiet retreat that has preserved its original charm to this day. The open Sundays offer the opportunity to experience this architectural gem in peace, learn more about its history, and let the special atmosphere of the place work its magic on you.

A regular event for anyone who appreciates culture, nature, and historical sites. Depending on the weather, the areas around Baldeneysee are perfect for relaxing after your visit. If the weather is good, a visit to Brehminsel or the pedal boat rental is also worthwhile.

The 30th German Sprint Rowing Championships will be held together with the 35th Kettwig Autumn Cup from Friday, October 9th to Sunday, October 11th, 2026 in Essen-Kettwig.

This once again combines the national elite sporting event with one of the most traditional regattas on the German rowing calendar. Downstream from boat Baldeneysee on the Ruhr River, the best athletes in the country will compete in high-class sprint races, while the Autumn Cup attracts a wide range of participants from clubs and recreational rowers.

The regatta grounds in Kettwig (Essen-) provide the stage for three days full of exciting competitions, intense duels, and sporting highlights. Spectators can look forward to a diverse program that combines both elite and recreational sports.

The German Rowing Association and the organizing club, Kettwiger Rudergesellschaft e.V. (KRG), announced that further information regarding the schedule, entries, and supporting program will be published later in the year. It is certain that clubs from Baldeneysee will also be participating and sending their athletes into the race.

The Segelclub Najade Essen e.V. (SCN) invites you to the traditional „Letzte Pötte“ regatta on Lake Baldeney on October 10 and 11, 2026 – the sporty finale of the sailing season in Essen. Racing will take place in the P-Boot RR, Dragon RR, and Folkboat RR classes.

Special highlight: The North Rhine-Westphalia State Championships for P-Boats and Folkboats will also be held as part of the event, promising athletic competition at the highest level. In autumnal winds, experienced crews will compete against each other for the last time this year – with an ambitious course set on titles, honor, and a fitting end to the season.

On October 24 and 25, 2026, the Yachtclub Ruhrland e.V. invites you to the traditional Ruhrland Folkboat Finale on the Baldeneysee.

In the Folkboat RR class, experienced crews compete in the final regatta event of the season, bringing classic yachts with character out onto the water. The regatta is entirely dedicated to maritime flair, sporting ambition, and a fitting conclusion to the sailing year. In late autumn conditions, participants and spectators experience a regatta weekend full of exciting races and a convivial atmosphere.

On October 31, 2026, the Marinekameradschaft Kupferdreh und Umgebung von 1912, together with the MRV e.V., invites you to the festive All Saints' Regatta on the Baldeneysee.

The Yardstick class is at the heart of the traditional end-of-season sail, where sailors from various clubs set sail together once more to bid a festive farewell to the season. The regatta offers not only athletic competition, but also a special opportunity to celebrate camaraderie on the water—a maritime finale with an autumnal flair and an intergenerational community spirit.

On November 7th and 8th, 2026, it will get sportingly cold again at the Baldeneysee in Essen: The Segelclub O-Jolle e.V. invites you to the 55th Ice Cup of the O-Jolle RR boat class.

Despite late-autumn temperatures, the traditional regatta format is a fixed highlight in the annual calendar of O-Dinghy sailors. The Ice Cup is not only a sporting competition, but also a sign of true sailing passion—because only the toughest dare to venture onto the water at temperatures near freezing. The regatta is considered an atmospheric season finale and offers an ideal opportunity for exchange and community among sailing enthusiasts.

On November 14, 2026, the Baldeneysee will once again become the focal point of North Rhine-Westphalian sailing: the NRW Champions of Champions brings together the best crews in the J/22 boat class and promises top-class regatta action in crisp autumn winds.

This regatta is more than a competition – it is a finale of the best. The Baldeneysee with its central location and versatile wind conditions offers ideal conditions for a demanding regatta experience. Wind, will, westerly wind – NRW crowns its champions.

The Kettwig Advent Village invites you to an atmospheric start to the Advent season in the historic old town of Kettwig, Essen's southernmost district, from November 27th to 29th, 2026.

Around the market church, the Petershof and the Weberbrunnen fountain, visitors can expect festively decorated market stalls, creative and charity bazaars as well as a diverse music and cultural program.

There will be craft activities and performances for children, while festive lights will bathe the old town in Christmas splendor. Shops will be open on Sunday.

On December 5th and 6th, 2026, the ETUF Sailing Division Essen invites you to the last regatta shift of the year: The traditional Extra Schicht offers young talents in the Optimist A and B boat classes the opportunity to prove their sailing skills even in December.

The highlights of the weekend: two days of exciting races on the wintry Wannsee with separate rankings for Opti-A (advanced sailors) and Opti-B (beginners). The "Extra Schicht" is more than just a regatta – it is a statement for up-and-coming sailors: anyone who still competes with motivation in frost and light winds demonstrates true passion for the sport. For many young sailors, it is a fitting conclusion to the season.
